Peel Common
Transitional area between Stubbington and the Gosport peninsula, defined by major road junctions, proximity to the former Daedalus airfield, and a mixture of residential pockets and open land.
Peel Common lies to the south-east of Stubbington village, forming a transitional area between the village and the Gosport peninsula. The name refers to the open common land that historically separated Stubbington from Lee-on-the-Solent, though much of this has been developed or repurposed over the decades. The area is dominated by the Peel Common wastewater treatment works and the roundabout junction where the B3334 meets Newgate Lane, one of the main traffic routes between Fareham and Gosport. The Newgate Lane corridor has been a persistent source of debate locally, with congestion at peak times prompting road improvement schemes and bypass discussions. Despite the infrastructure, Peel Common retains pockets of open land, including scrubby common ground and hedgerow corridors that provide wildlife habitat. The residential properties in this area tend to be post-war housing, with some more recent developments filling in gaps along the road frontages. HMS Daedalus, the former Royal Naval air station that now operates as Solent Airport and the Daedalus development site, lies immediately to the south-east, and its proximity has shaped Peel Common's character for decades. During the Second World War, the area saw significant military activity due to Daedalus operations. Today the area functions primarily as a through-route and junction rather than a destination in its own right, but it remains an identifiable part of Stubbington's geography, particularly for those commuting toward Gosport or Lee-on-the-Solent.
