Fishing Near Stubbington
Shore fishing, harbours, and angling in the area
Stubbington's position close to the Solent coast makes fishing accessible without travelling far. Shore fishing, harbour fishing, and nearby freshwater options give anglers a reasonable range of choices.
Hill Head is the nearest fishing spot, just south of the village. The shoreline around Hill Head harbour and the foreshore stretching toward Meon Shore offers sea fishing from the beach and rocks. Bass, flounder, sole, and various species of ray are caught from these marks depending on the season. The harbour wall itself is a popular spot for casual fishing, and it sees regulars throughout the year. Meon Shore to the west is another well-known mark, with fishing from the shingle beach into deeper water. Summer evenings at Meon Shore are particularly pleasant, with the sun setting behind the Isle of Wight.
Lee-on-the-Solent's beach provides a long stretch of shore fishing, with the benefit of a relatively clean seabed and good access. The fishing here is tidal, and local knowledge of the best states of tide and conditions makes a significant difference to catches.
For boat fishing, charter boats operate from the Solent ports, including Gosport and Portsmouth, offering trips targeting a wider range of species in deeper water. Wrecks, reefs, and sandbanks in the Solent and beyond provide productive fishing grounds. Booking a charter trip is straightforward, and group bookings can reduce the cost per head.
Freshwater fishing is available at several lakes and ponds in the Fareham and wider Hampshire area. These are generally managed as coarse fisheries, stocked with carp, tench, bream, and other species. Day tickets are available at most venues. The River Meon, which flows to the coast west of Stubbington, offers some fishing, though access is more limited and may require club membership or permission.
Tackle shops in Fareham stock equipment and bait for both sea and freshwater fishing, and staff can advise on local marks, conditions, and what is currently being caught. Getting advice from the tackle shop before heading out is worthwhile, particularly for newcomers to the area who do not yet know the marks.
Fishing from the shore does not require a licence, but freshwater fishing in England requires a rod licence from the Environment Agency, available online at modest annual cost.
For a village that is not itself on the coast, Stubbington provides surprisingly good access to fishing. Hill Head and Meon Shore are within walking or cycling distance, and the wider area offers enough variety to keep most anglers occupied throughout the year.
